More Notts Schoolboy Internationals!

Both Liam Taylor (Garibaldi) and Isaac Walker (West Bridgford) were selected to represent England Schools' in their international fixture against Scotland.

Their selection rounded off a wonderful year for both boys. Taylor is the current Notts Matchplay Champion and also won the Midland Youths at Stoke Rochford in July. Walker is the current Notts Schools' Strokeplay Champion and finished Runner Up in the Midland Boys earlier in the season.

The boys are regular foursomes partners for Nottinghamshire Under 18 Boys and were asked to recreate their County partnership on to the international stage. They halved their match in the morning but both won their singles matches in the afternoon, helping to secure an English victory.

The match was played at Hesketh Golf Club, Southport on Monday 10th September.

2012 National Schools Championship - The Kendleshire

This event was played at The Kendleshire Golf Club, near Bristol on 25th June 2012 in what was probably the last day of warm sunshire we've had!!

Whilst Jodie and Isaac showed glimpses of their talent, Liam Taylor had an excellent day which resulted in his selection to play for England against Scotland at Hesketh Golf Club in September.

2012 Midland Schools' Championship - Matlock Golf Club

Following the cancellation of the above competition due to the course closure at Matlock Golf Club on Friday 8th June 2012 following overnoight torrential rain, the Midlands Committee have had to make decisions regarding the composition of their team to go to the National Championships.

The decision made was forced upon them as there was no time, or availability, to make revised arrangements to play their Championship, and therefore, following much deliberation between the Counties that make up the Midlands, it was decided that the ten boys and five girls that were due to compete at Matlock would be selected. This decision left Nottinghamshire with three representatives;-

Liam Taylor (Garibaldi)

Isaac Walker (West Bridgford)

Jodie Peacock (Dukeries College)

Our best wishes go to them at The Kendleshire on Monday 25th June,

Issac Walker v Lee Betteridge

On a cold, misty and damp day at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell), Lee Betteridge (Garibaldi) and Isaac Walker (West Bridgford) fought out the final of this year's Matchplay Final. A close affair ensued with little in it throughout. Walker took a two hole advantage into the lunch break - a lead he never gave up as he ran out victorious by a margin of 3&2.

Walker's victory not only made up for his disappointment in losing in last year's Semi Final, but also completed the first 'School Slam' to follow up his previous victories in Schools' Golf competition - Best Net (2006), Best Gross (2010, 2012), Under 16 Champion (2010) and Team Champion (2010).

Congratulations to both boys on their achievement in reaching the final.

In the handicap competitions, Jack Jephson (Quarrydale) took the Boys title by a shot from James Moore (Beckett) to make it a speldid double for his School following Joe Hague's victory in the Matchplay final the day before. In the Girls section, Eliza Davidson (Nottingham Girls High School) shot a stunning 61 to leave the rest of the field well behind.

As far as the team competition, Quarrydale (Jack Jephson, Travis Turner & Lewis Mallinson) completed the third celebration for that School by winning by two shots from West Bridgford A (Isaac Walker, Jacob Walker & Jack Taylor).

Jack Sallis selected for England - again!!

Following the cancellation of the Under 16's Championship, the English Schools' Golf Association were left with a dilema as to the final team to play Wales in their annual match which this year is being played at Copt Heath Golf Club in August. The final two places should have gone to the winner and runner up of that cancelled event so they have now decided to return to the final scores at the National Finals and this has resulted in Jack Sallis being selected. He received his call from the National Boys Team manager Jason Rhodes to confirm.

Congratulations Jack on winning your second cap!! Good luck in the match.

2011 ESGA Under 16 Championship

It was our intention to provide a report from the above event that took place at Bolton Old Links Golf Club on Monday 18th July 2011. Unfortunately the foul weather expereinced on the day before and the day of the competition put paid to that! Practice rounds on Sunday were limited to nine holes due to rain covered greens and overnoght rain meant that the competition couldn't go ahead as scheduled. It now seems likely that it will not be played this year.

So much for the Great British Summer!!

2011 ESGA National Team Championship

As in 2010, Nottinghamshire sent two teams to represent the County in the event - this year being played on the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa Golf Club.

Asfield School, as our winners, and Valley School, as runners up went over to the Lincolnshire course and competed in what was at times torrential rain. Notwithstanding the weather, both Schools put in very creditable performances scoring 78 points and 76 points respectively. Unfortunately this left them both off the rostrum although Ashfield did take fourth spot, just two behind the third placed School and four behind the winners - Woodbridge from Suffolk.

Full results can be found here.

2011 ESGA National Finals

The Schools' National Finals have now been held at a pristine Belton Park Golf Club, Grantham. The weather was superb! For the Practice Round, it was so hot that some competitiors left the course after nine, preferring to walk the second nine to conserve energy. It also prompted the organisers to scoot off to the near supermarket to purchase 300 bottles of water for competitors use during the tournament itself.

Nottinghamshire were represented by Emily Lyle and Rachel Boulton - a late call up for an injured player - for the girls, and the boys were represented by Jordan Boulton, Jack Sallis and Lee Shepherd.

Scoring conditions were excellent in the morning as there was a breeze that was keeping temperatures down in the sunshine, illustrated splendidly by the fact that a girl broke the course record for the Ladies in the morning. Rachel Boulton performed magnificently in the morning with an opening 75 despite the fact that she was on the 1st Tee less than twelve hours before she knew she was playing. All three boys were in contention after the first round being just a few shots behind the leaders.

The afternoon conditions were much the same although there was a constant threat of rain and a storm - thankfully neither materialised. Rachel followed up her 75 with a 79 which left her out of the picture but nevertheless a very creditable performformance. Emily had one of those day that we all get but they do at least make the good days taste that little bit sweeter. Both Jordan and Lee fell away during the afternoon, but Jack produced a 72 to go with his morning 73 to just miss out on an international place - he was so close that he has been named as a reserve for the Scotland match in September. If only his putter had been a little warmer as tee to green, he was magnificent.

A wonderful day was had by all, marred only by the fact that someone took Jordan's day shoes (size 8) and replaced them with a pair of golf shoes (size 11)!

The eventual winners - Lianna Bailey (Leicestershire) for the girls and Bradley Moore (Derbyshire) both played consistently and excellently over both rounds. Also special mention ought to go to Cameron Long (Staffordshire, who not only returned a sub par 71 in the afternoon, but covered the back nine in a mere 32 shots!

An excellent day was had by all and we wish all of the competitiors that now go on to the National Finals at Belton Park Golf Club, Lincolnshire the very best of luck.

The 2011 Matchplay Final is as follows;-

A wonderful final was played out at Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club on Monday 24th October 2011 between Jodie Peacock (Dukeries College) and Joe Hague (Quarrydale), the losing finalist in last year's final.

The morning round saw some splendid golf and there was little between the two and they went into the lunch break all square. However, it was Joe that came out the stronger into the second round, establishing an early lead that was never surrendered, eventually running out a 7 & 6 victory to put last year's disappointment well and truly behind him. Nonetheless, both finalists did very well, both in reaching the final and then in the final itself.

This was aparticularly pleasing victory for John Holland, Notts Schools' Golf's Matchplay Co-Ordinator as he finally got to see one of his boys take the honours.

The above event has now been completed at Sherwood Forest Golf Club in wonderful springtime sunshine.

For the third consecutive year, a sudden death play off was required to determine the Boys Strokeplay Champion as both James Hollis (Fernwood) and Jordan Boulton (All Saints RC School) shot magnificent 73's. After halving the first, Hollis took the title on the second extra hole. As both are Under 16, a countback over the back nine was needed to separate them for this title and again Hollis came out on top. Oliver Maltby-Smith (The Manor School) shot 64 to record the best net from the Boys Section.

In the Girls section, Jodie Peacock (Dukeries) claimed the best gross prize with Amy Oxbury (The Minster School) coming up with the best net of the day.

This year's Champion School Team was Ashfield School taking the honours. All members of their team played their part in a three shot victory over Valley School, who also finished in the runners up slot in 2010. Both Schools have now been invited to represent Nottinghamshire in the National Finals which are being held at Woodhall Spa in July.

2011

Just to let you know that the Affiliation Forms and Entry Forms for our 2011 Strokeplay Championship and Matchplay Championship are now available for downloading from this website. Just select Competitions from the menu and then downloads from the options available.

The major change for 2011 is that our Team Championship will reflect the format for the National Team Championship i.e. a team will comprise of 3 players and the best two scores from those three will constitute the team score. Just on this subject, the National Team Championship is jointly organised by the English Schools' Golf Association (ESGA) and the English Golf Union and a recent decision has been announced that this event will be played at Woodhall Spa Golf Club, Lincolnshire from 2011 onwards. The date for the event is unchanged and is noted on our website diary. As in 2010, we will invite the Nottinghamshire Team Champions and Runners Up to represent Nottinghamshire in these finals.

The only other change to note is that we have increased the Affiliation Fee to £15.00 - the first increase in this fee since 2005. This increase has been imposed due to the increased Affiliation Fee to ESGA and more importantly, the increased support for our players to participate in the following events -  Midlands Championship, National Championship, National Team Championship and Under 16 Championship.

Perhaps this is an opportune time to announce that we have decided to change our Golf Year (Jan 1 - Dec 31) to bring in line with the School Year (Sept 1 - Aug 31). The major effect this will have is that we plan to hold our 2012 Strokeplay Championship during the October 2011 Half Term to try and alleviate some of the increasing problem of fixture congestion. This move has been trialed in Bedfordshire with enormous success.

On a very bright and sunny, though very frosty and cold October morning, Liam Taylor (Garibaldi) - the defending champion - and Joe Hague (Quarrydale) took part in the final of the Nottinghamshire Scholls' Matchplay final at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell).

The first 18 holes were very even with never more than two holes in it, and Joe entered the interval with a 1 up lead. He maintained this with just six holes to play when Liam made his move to remove this deficit and move into a 1 up lead after 15. With the remaining two holes being halved, the final went down the last. Both boys missed the fairway to the left on 18. Liam's approach was just short and right of the green, with Joe missing the green to the left. Liam chipped up to around two feet but Joe went around 15 feet past the hole. With Joe now needing to hole out to have a chance of winning the hole and taking the match to a play off, a good few moments were spent weighing up the task ahead but unfortunately, the putt was missed, Liam's putt was conceded to confirm a 2 up victory and a defence of the title he won in 2009. Liam now becomes only the third player to have won this title two years in succession.

Well done to both players in participating in a splendid match to bring the curtain down on what has been a wonderful year for Nottinghamshire Schools' Golf.

Jack Sallis - England International

  • Jack pictured here with his fellow internationals (far right, kneeling)

Jack pictured here with his fellow internationals (far right, kneeling)

Following on from previous news, Jack Sallis (Colonel Frank Seely) made the trip to St Pierre, Chepstow for the England v Wales Schools' International fixture this month. As you can imagine it was a very exciting experience for all the lads and parents especially the competitors who hadn’t played for their country before.

Jack was paired with a fellow English Golf Union Regional  Coaching Squad colleague from Chesterfield - Mark Porter -  for the foursomes. They complimented one anothers games very well. After a solid front 9 in which they were 1 up with 3 birdies, the more experienced Wales pairing holed 3 good putts for birdies on the back 9 going 1 up on the long 16th with an excellent birdie to Jack and Marks par.  Two  halves on the last 2 holes just edged out Jack and Marks gallant efforts.

In the afternoon singles again Jack played solidly, especially on the back 9, in which he played to par in windy and wet conditions. However,  after being 2 down after 9. it wasn’t quite enough to level his match and again Jack was on the wrong side of some brilliant putting by his opponent, typified by the Welsh boys’ 10ft par saving putt on the last with Jack lying close to the hole for his par.

Not all was lost though - the final result was 10.5 to 7.5 in Englands favour. All the results from the match can be found here.

Once again, congratulations to Jack on his qualification for the team and his performance at the match. Nottinghamshire Schools' Golf is very proud of him.

2010 Under 16's National Championships

Jack Sallis on receiving his medal for second place.

  • The Daily Telegraph reports the results.

The Daily Telegraph reports the results.

The 2010 National Schools' Golf 'Tour' reached an exciting climax at the splendid Delamere Forest Golf Club, Cheshire as Nottinghamshire paraded their crack squad of competitors - reigning Strokeplay Champion - Isaac Walker (West Bridgford) and reigning Matchplay Champion - Liam Taylor (Garibaldi), together with the trio involved with the English Golf Union's Regional Development Squad - Joe Hague (Quarrydale), Jack Sallis (Colonel Frank Seely) and Jacob Walker (West Bridgford).

A variety of weather conditions that included a light wind, strong winds, drizzle, showers and sunshine saw our famous five compete for the Under 16 title and the chance to represent English Schools' against Wales next month at St Pierre, Chepstow.

Jack Sallis was our performer of the day with two super sub par rounds (70, 71) to shoot 141 and a tie for first place that he narrowly lost on a countback over the last nine holes. A fantastic performance and though he just missed out on the main event, Jack will now go on to represent England. WELL DONE JACK!!! Of the other performances, both Liam (71, 74) and Isaac (74, 71) shot 145 and achieved a top ten finish. With three of our players in the top ten and with four sub par rounds between them, we're sure that had there have been a team award on offer, we would have been in the front line to receive it. Unfortunately, Joe (77, 76) and Jacob (75, 80) have both had better days and will have better days to come. A tremendous end to the season and we look forward to advising you of Jack's experience of international golf as soon as we can.

Further photos have been published in the Gallery area of this website. The full list of results from the competition can be found by clicking here - Boys, Girls.

FOOTNOTE - Despite valient efforts to cement Inter-County Schools' relationships, Liam Taylor was unable to obtain the telephone number of the very attractive young lady from Staffordshire. However, his ambassadorial ambitions have been noted for future use.

2010 English Schools' Team Championships

  • Valley School

    Valley School

  • West Bridgford School

    West Bridgford School

Everything went to plan on Day 1. The minibus was duly collected and packed. The West Bridgford School and Valley School boys were picked up as scheduled and the journey to Dorset was smooth if not a little long. Arrival at Came Down Golf Club was ahead of time in the glorious sunshine and an earlier practice time meant the boys could shake off their travel weariness to get down to business. Practice time over, there was still time to set up the tents, enjoy fish and chips on the promenade at Weymouth before taking in the Holland/Uruguay World Cup semi final. A return to base saw the boys settle down for the night under canvas after lengthy conversation.!

The morning arrived, as did bacon butties to provide nourishment for the day. Unfortunately, this is where plans started taking a turn for the worse. Lots of cloud cover meant no sun and this had been replaced by drizzle. With all the boys ready for action, the short trip from campsite to Golf Club took an age due to the morning rush hour traffic and when we finally got there, play had been delayed indefinitely due to fog which prevented us from seeing more than 100 yards ahead of us! With the Head Greenkeeper assuring the organisers that the fog was set for the day, cancellation looked inevitable. However, with a little easing of the fog and with four ball spotters on the 1st, it was decided to try and get some play in with a reduced competition of 9 holes.

Fortunately, more or less as soon as the first group teed off after a two hour delay, the easing continued and within a further hour, almost full visibility had returned albeit without the sunshine.

West Bridgford scored 37 points (Isaac Walker19, Jacob Walker 18, Tony Wells 8) and this looked a promising score for a while. However,  as further scores came in, they dropped back to 9th place which was still commendable given the distance travelled, uncertainty over play and weather conditions. Valley School were just one point back at 36 (Oliver Bradbury 18, Jake Braybrook 18, Luke Atherton 15) and in 10th place.

Full results can be found by visiting the EGU website - go to www.englishgolfunion.org, then Championships, then EGU Championships and Tournaments and finally English Schools Team Championships.

An excellent journey and some good performances by our lads even if they didn't get on the winner's rostrum.

The 2010 National Championships were recently held at John O'Gaunts Golf Club, Bedfordshire which was in excellent condition and basking in hot sunshine. Due to two late withdrawals from the Midlands Team, the Team Manager called upon two boys whose borthers had already qualified as replacements - Harry Ibbertson of Warwickshire and Jacob Walker (West Bridgford School) of Nottinghamshire. This meant that Jacob joined qualifiers Lee Shepherd (The Brunts School) and Isaac Walker (West Bridgford School) in the finals.

Star man for the day was Lee Shepherd. Having gained a 'Mr Consistency' label following his two 73's in the Midlands, he added value to that title by producing two 75's at the Nationals. This left him positioned at 20th and unfortunately, just missed out on automatic selection for the team in the forthcoming internationals against Scotland and Wales although he has been named as reserve for the Scotland match.

Just behind Lee in 22nd place and a shot was Isaac Walker. Isaac suffered trolley troubles in the opening round and shot 81. However, in the afternoon, despite spending more time in the trees than Tarzan, a very 'Sevvy' like performance saw him produce a sub par round (one of only four all day) of 70.

Jacob started brightly, being only one over after 7, but then faltered to 80 in the morning. As with Isaac, Jacob improved in the afternoon, without as many tree visits, and shot 76.

It's many congratulations then to Lee and further details of his role of reserve, and photos from the day, will be added in due course.

Notts duo make it to National Finals

The Midlands Schools' Championships were recently held at Ingon Manor Golf & Country Club, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire sent a team of four boys and two girls to compete. The Girls Team managed to take 3rd position whilst the Boys finished in 4th place. However, there was better news in the individual competitions. In the Boys section, Lee Shepherd (The Brunts School) was a model of consistency in producing two rounds of 73 that left him just outside the prizes but did ensure his qualification in the National Final later in June. Joining him there will be Isaac Walker (West Bridgford School), who completed a remarkable return to competitive golf following an emergency hospital operation just two weeks prior. Walker shot 75, 73. Sophie Godley (Worksop College) was the best of the girls but narrowly failed to qualify.

The National Finals will be held at John O'Gaunt Golf Club, Bedfordshire on 21st June.

The 2010 Annual Strokeplay Championships were held at Beeston Fields Golf Club. Despite it being a dry day, scoring conditions were made difficult by a very blustery wind, however, that didn't deter the boys from West Bridgford School who managed to sweep the board.

Not only did they take the Team prize (Tony Wells 65, Isaac Walker 72, Jacob Walker 76) by a clear 11 strokes from second placed Valley School, but Tony Wells also took the Best Boy's Net  and Isaac Walker took the Best Under 16 Gross and the Best Boy's Gross overall after a thrilling four way play off.

In the Girl's section, Sophie Godley of Worksop College took the Best Girl's Gross and Gina Champion of Nottingham Girls High School succesfully defended the Best Girl's Net she won in 2009.
