Ashfield win English Schools’ title in tie breaker

Nottinghamshire’s Ashfield School broke a deadlock at the top of the leaderboard to win the English Schools’ Team Championship at Woodhall Spa today.

They won by the narrowest of margins, taking the trophy on countback from Thomas Telford School in Shropshire, and Northampton School for Boys, after all three had tied.

Each team had amassed 74 stableford points from their best two scores. The previously discarded scores of the third team members were then counted to decide the tie and the 31 points of Sam Greatorex took Ashfield to the title.

The team’s top scorer was Callum Thorpe, 16, who had 40 points and is heading for a reduction to his 18 handicap. Finn Nelson, the Nottinghamshire U14 boys’ county captain, scored 34 points off his nine handicap – despite injuring his ribs in a fall from his bike two days ago.

Greatorex, who plays off 11, was initially disappointed with his result. “I just thought I didn’t do my team-mates much good.
But in the end it came down to the last man and a bad day became a good day,” he said.

The win was a great sign-off from school life for Thorpe, who is now set for a career in joinery. “It’s a big accomplishment to be the best in the country,” he remarked.

Thorpe and Greatorex, 15, are members at Coxmoor, while Nelson, 13, belongs to Sherwood Forest. The players were accompanied by teacher Susie Anderson who is also a keen golfer and Sherwood Forest member – and whose daughter, Emma, won England Golf’s 2017 Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Finishing in sixth place and also representing Nottinghamshire Schools was Tuxford Academy. The team consisted of Callum Macfie, Nathan Gill and George Cordall.

Past NSGA Player wins Presitious Young Ambassador Award

Nottinghamshire’s Emma Anderson, who inspires new players to take up the game, has been honoured as England Golf’s Young Ambassador of the Year.

Emma, of Sherwood Forest Golf Club received the award, presented in association with the Golf Foundation, at a glittering ceremony last night at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The runner-up Dualle Dabayl, a golf activator with Community Golf, Surrey

Emma was honoured alongside Olympic champion Justin Rose, Masters champion Danny Willett and Solheim Cup player Charley Hull as well as other players and heroes from the grass roots game.

The England Golf Awards shone a spotlight on great moments and achievement at all levels of English golf – and Emma’s enthusiasm to get more people playing, especially girls, was highlighted to the audience in a video.

“I was really surprised and really proud,” she said of her award. “It’s nice to be recognised, although it’s not what you do it for.”

She added: “I’ve been given a lot of opportunities through golf and it’s nice to repay a little bit – plus I enjoy being around golf and seeing the faces of the kids as they are introduced to the game.”

The 20-year-old university student has been the Nottinghamshire girls’ captain and encourages new young players with a prominent role in the county’s Girls Golf Rocks project, which shows youngsters that golf is fun and friendly game.

She helped at the inaugural Midland Girls’ Festival of Golf, the Nottinghamshire School Games, the Nottinghamshire City Golf project which showcased golf at major community events and she’s on the England Golf Youth Panel.

Emma is also involved in all aspects of golf at the club and PGA professional John Vaughan commented: “Emma’s name is always first down on the list, there’s never an excuse, it’s always ‘When do you need me, what time and I’ll try and bring some friends along as well.’”

Emma was introduced to golf by her parents when she was a youngster and she loves the family aspect of the game and the friendships she’s made: “I’ve got a lot of mums at the club,” she laughed.

She’s also a regular golfer, keeping playing while studying for her degree in sports marketing at Manchester University. Her current ambition is to cut her 10 handicap down into single figures – and keep her places in the Nottinghamshire ladies’ second team.

Notts Schools Callum helps England Maintain their winning ways

England maintained their dominance over the Welsh in the annual international at Clyne near Swansea, winning 11½ - 6½. But the contest was closer than the scoreline suggests.

A home victory was a possibility after the morning foursomes with Wales going into lunch 4-2 ahead after winning both girls games while the boys were tied 2-2.

However, it was a different story in the afternoon singles when the Welsh secured only one victory from the 12 games although eight contests went to the final green.

In perfect conditions and on a course, which is built on public land and where it was a case of avoiding the grazing horses and sheep, Wales looked set for victory as each game progressed through the ninth hole.

But the English youngsters then pulled out all the stops, the girls winning their series 3-1 while the boys dropped only three halves to run out 6½ - 1½ winners.

For England, James Bailey emerged with a 100% record, winning his single 3&1 against Elis Lewis having triumphed in the foursomes alongside Notts Schools Callum Macfie.

Having lost both their foursomes, the England girls were determined to turn things around in the singles and the trio of Norfolk players led the way.

Amy Taylor secured a 2&1 win while Amelia Williamson won by two holes with Ellie Brown edging her game by holing her putt from off the green at the 18th to secure a two hole victory.
